Stop your AI misreading company policies and report hierarchies
Your AI gets the structure of the document, not a guess at it. Word stores headings, lists and tables as styles, and styles map straight onto Markdown. Heading 1 becomes a #, a numbered list stays numbered, a table stays a table. The AI answers accurately first time, and you stop re-prompting.

What you get
- Headings at the right levels, as long as the document used real heading styles.
- Bullets, numbered lists and nested lists, in order.
- Tables as markdown tables. Links still clickable.
Before you drop it in
- Tracked changes are the one that catches people. Accept all, save, then convert.
- The meter shows the markdown token count. The attached-versus-markdown comparison is measured on PDFs, where the page-image charge sits. For Word the saving is the styling, comments, embedded objects and empty space the model no longer reads, plus a file you can see and paste anywhere.
What survives, what doesn't
| Headings using Word styles | ✓ Kept | Heading 1 to 6 become # to ######. |
| Headings faked with big bold text | ✗ Lost | They arrive as bold paragraphs. Apply real heading styles first if it matters. |
| Lists and nested lists | ✓ Kept | |
| Tables | ✓ Kept | Markdown pipe tables. Merged cells are split. |
| Bold, italic, links | ✓ Kept | |
| Images | ✗ Lost | Dropped. |
| Text boxes, SmartArt, embedded objects | ✗ Lost | Skipped entirely. |
| Comments | ✗ Lost | Not included. |
| Tracked changes | △ Partly | Accept or reject them before you convert, or old and new text can land side by side. |
| Old .doc files | ✗ Lost | Open in Word, save as .docx, then convert. |
What it looks like
A change request with styled headings, a table and a checklist converts to:
# Change Request CR-014 **Raised by:** Site office **Status:** Awaiting approval ## What's changing The pour sequence for Level 3 moves forward one week. | Item | Was | Now | | --- | --- | --- | | Pour date | 21 Oct | 14 Oct | | Crew | 6 | 8 | ## Before approval - [ ] Engineer sign-off - [ ] Crane booking confirmed
Questions about Word (DOCX)
Are Word styles kept?
Yes. Heading styles become markdown heading levels, bold and italic stay, lists stay lists. Fonts, colours and page layout don't exist in markdown, so they go.
Do tables convert?
To markdown pipe tables. Merged cells become separate cells, so check anything with a complex header row.
What about tracked changes and comments?
Comments are dropped. Tracked changes should be accepted or rejected first, otherwise both versions of the text can come through.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. Open it in Word, save as .docx, then convert.
Will this cut my AI bill like a PDF does?
Yes, for the same reasons. Styling, embedded objects, comments, tracked changes and empty space are noise the model pays to read. Markdown drops them and keeps the structure, so the answers follow your document's hierarchy. The measured attached-versus-markdown comparison is for PDFs, where the page-image charge sits.
